Transport options for Rome Jubilee 2025
With over 30 million pilgrims expected to descend on the Eternal City for Rome’s 2025 Jubilee Year, moving visitors from place to place is going to be a big logistical challenge.
The City of Rome is beefing up its public transport options and also carrying out several public works projects to improve roadways and make traffic flow more smoothly through the capital. The city’s public transport company, ATAC, keeps a running list of all its Jubilee projects on its website (in Italian only).
Meanwhile, the Vatican has partnered with a private transport company to offer a special dedicated transport service for religious pilgrims throughout the Jubilee Year. The company, called My Safe Place Transfer, will provide fixed-rate private transfers from Rome’s Fiumicino airport into the city center at a cost of €19.99 per person for religious pilgrims, with discounts for groups of five or more.
Transfers are also available with official Rome city taxis. The fixed rate for a taxi from Rome’s Fiumicino airport to any destination within the Aurelian walls (which includes the historic center and the majority of places where tourists stay) is €55 per taxi, including luggage.
Private transfers from Fiumicino airport to Rome are the most convenient and most comfortable way to get into the city. Your driver will wait for you at the arrivals terminal. As soon as you exit you’ll go directly to your private vehicle for a quick and easy ride directly to your accommodations.
Several apps are available to help visitors manage their transport while in the city. Hailing a cab isn’t a common practice in Rome, so many locals and visitors use the app itTaxi to request a taxi. Uber is also available in Rome.
For navigating public transport options, the city’s public transport company ATAC offers the app Roma Mobilità (Apple App Store, Google Play), which provides route planning as well as real-time updates on bus schedules and wait times.
For quick trips that avoid traffic altogether, some adventurous visitors use e-scooter and e-bike sharing services that run with apps. The cost for this service is generally 1 euro to unlock the e-scooter or e-bike and then roughly 25 euro cents per minute of use. With these apps you can register and locate the nearest e-scooter: Lime, Dott, Bird.
And for transport without wheels, you can rely on yourself! Rome is an incredibly walkable city, so with your own two feet you can explore the wonders of the Vatican and the Eternal City at your own leisurely pace. Walking tours in Rome and the Vatican are an especially great way to get an expert-led experience of all the amazing features of St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.
